Can't SSH in remotely

I am unable to SSH in remotely to my VitalPBX, I get the login prompt but after I enter the password for root it says “Access Denied”. What I have tried below.

  1. The remote IP is allowed in the firewall (confirmed because I get a loin prompt.
  2. It is the right password as it works on a console.
  3. I changed sshd_config #permitrootlogin to yes. (Server was rebooted afterwards)

Any other ideas? We did not make any changes over the base install.

Is this a Debian Server?

Debian doesn’t allow direct login using the root user. You must use an additional user.

It is, adding another user worked. Thanks.

“Debian doesn’t allow direct login using the root user” - BY DEFAULT.
You can enable it and set a password for the root user and then you can.

“You must use an additional user.” - only to enable password login for root and set a root password.
